CARING FOR FISH

EVERY DAY

If you have a goldfish or betta (Siamese Fighting Fish) in a bowl, you need to feed your fish every day and check that the water is clean. (Maybe you should get a bigger bowl, too- your fish would appreciate the extra room!) Every few days, you’ll need to change the water. Use water that is treated with a water conditioner sold at pet stores -- that will remove the chemicals in tap water! Use a sponge to wipe the bowl clean, but NO SOAP! It could kill your fish friends!

EVERY WEEK

If you have a larger bowl or tank, you might be able to get away with cleaning the fish’s home once a week, following the same rules as above. If your tank is ten gallons or more, you can probably replace just half the water with fresh water. Try planting some live plants from the pet store in the fish tank!

EVERY MONTH

If you have gravel in your fish tank, you’ll need to do a very good "vacuuming" using a syphon from the pet store. Lots of debris and waste hides in the bottom of the tank!

EVERY YEAR

Are your fish getting too big for their bowl or tank? Time to move up to a bigger size! Make sure you have filters and air supplies that are right for the kind of fish you have.
