VIRTUAL
ADOPTIONS!
There are many places to get
a animal companion: You could buy one from a pet store, get one from a
“free to good home” ad in the newspaper, or go to a breeder. Here are
some reasons why getting one from the humane society or any animal shelter
is a great idea:
They need homes! The
Washington Humane Society gets about 11,000 dogs and cats every year. Most
are healthy, wonderful pets who got lost or were brought in by people who
couldn’t (or didn’t want to) keep them.
It’s a great deal! The
adoption fee is under $100 and includes spaying and neutering
, a
veterinary examination and tests to be sure the animal is healthy, and has
all the vaccinations the animal needs.
If you had to pay for all that separately, it would come to $250 -
$300! When you buy from a pet store or breeder, you have to pay for the
animal ($100-$600 usually) and then pay for everything else, too!
Since there are so many animals already needing homes, why pay someone to breed even more? Pet stores treat animals as “products” for sale. They pay breeding farms to breed thousands of animals, and these breeding farms (also known as “mills”) don’t treat the animals very well.
